Looking back at the 8th West Coast Fibre Art Retreat!

This past November, West Coast NEST hosted the 8th West Coast Fibre Art Retreat at the Black Rock Oceanfront Resort in Ucluelet. The event brought together fibre enthusiasts from near and far for three days of creativity, connection, and inspiration.
Located on the edge of Big Beach, with waves crashing just outside our windows, the retreat offered the perfect backdrop for making art, sharing skills, and enjoying the West Coast’s natural beauty.
"Loved the retreat venue so much! What a beautiful place, and Black Rock Oceanfront Resort was so comfortable and indulgent." - 2025 Fibre Art Retreat Participant
A Few Days Full of Creativity

Participants immersed themselves in a variety of workshops led by our talented instructors. Attendees learned the traditional techniques of cedar weaving with Rose and Brian Wilson of Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ, leaving the class with their new woven baskets.

Knitters practiced twisted stitches and mitten shaping in Faye Kennington’s Frost Fern Mittens workshop, bringing home the beginnings of beautifully cozy, textured mittens.

In Megan Nodecker’s Sweaters That Fit workshop, participants explored the art of garment fitting and walked away with practical tools and tips to create sweaters they’ll love to wear.

Meanwhile, Robin Richardson’s Natural Dyeing workshop introduced everyone to the beauty of eco-printing, allowing participants to design unique silk scarves using carefully selected flowers and foliage.
"All the instructors are clearly passionate about their specialty, which transfers to participants in the best way." -2025 Fibre Art Retreat Participant
Beyond the Workshops

The retreat wasn’t just about crafting. Participants explored the Wild Pacific Trail on a guided walk, marveled at the rugged coastal scenery, and discovered treasures from local vendors during the evening marketplace.

In between activities, some took quiet moments to relax by the ocean, knit by the lounge fireplace, and connect with fellow fibre artists, making the retreat both an active and restorative experience.
Looking Ahead to 2026

As we reflect on the 2025 retreat, we are filled with gratitude for the instructors, participants, local vendors, and Tourism Ucluelet, whose support made this event possible. We can’t wait to gather again this year, continuing to celebrate fibre arts, creativity, and the stunning West Coast scenery that makes this event so unique.
"Fantastic retreat, I'm looking forward to more in the future." -2025 Fibre Art Retreat Participant
