For its seventh year in a row, the West Coast Fibre Art Retreat, hosted by the West Coast N.E.S.T., returned to the stunning Black Rock Oceanfront Resort on the shores of Ucluelet. From November 13-15th 2024, participants enjoyed a few days filled with creativity, learning, and breathtaking ocean views. This annual retreat has become a cherished gathering for fiber art enthusiasts, attracting not only local participants but also individuals who have traveled from across British Columbia, other provinces, and even from abroad!

Workshops Inspiring Creativity

Over three days, participants were treated to a variety of workshops led by skilled local and visiting instructors. From the delicate art of cedar weaving with Rose and Brian Wilson to the sustainable crafting of marine debris macrame with Kim Leckey (Sea Woven), there was something for everyone to explore. Faye Kennington's (UkeeKnits) Thrumby Slippers workshop brought warmth and comfort to the forefront, while Catherine Knutsson’s Arched Gusset Mittens class challenged participants to perfect intricate knitting techniques. The diverse offerings ensured that each attendee could try something new, hone their skills, and leave with their thoughtfully made creations.

Connection & Community

Fibre arts aren’t just about crafting, but also about connection! The retreat’s cozy fall atmosphere, set against the backdrop of the roaring Pacific Ocean, created the perfect setting for participants to bond over their shared passion. The vendor marketplace is also another great way for attendees to mingle, enjoy wine, cheese, and desserts, as well as discover unique, locally crafted items. The first hour was reserved for participants to enjoy the Marketplace and then the public was invited to join the fun. With 45 people coming from outside the retreat, this has been our most successful Fibre Art Marketplace yet!

This year, we also offered optional knitting drop-ins for participants which was a great way for everyone to get to know each other a little more and work on their skills with the guidance of our talented instructors.

When Nature Meets Art

The West Coast Fibre Art Retreat wouldn’t be complete without incorporating the region’s natural beauty. Participants had the opportunity to stretch their legs with a walk along the Wild Pacific Trail, guided by the knowledgeable Barb Beasley of the Association of Wetlands Stewards for Clayoquot and Barkley Sounds. Everyone marveled at the rugged coastline, towering rainforests, and the fascinating facts shared along the trail. The walk is often a highlight for many participants, especially when the sunshine decides to shine brightly just in time for our walk, as it did this year. Everyone is always welcome to join, including participants' partners and pets!

Celebrating Seven Years

This year marked the seventh edition of the retreat! It’s always heartwarming to welcome both first-time attendees and familiar faces who have returned year after year. What began as a small gathering in its early years has now grown into a highly anticipated West Coast event.

Looking Ahead

As the retreat came to a close, attendees left with more than just the projects they had started – they took home newfound skills, meaningful connections, and fresh inspiration. Many shared their excitement to return for future events, eager to continue their journey in the world of fiber arts. We can’t wait to welcome everyone back for the next West Coast Fibre Art Retreat in 2025!
