Leatherback Sea Turtles in BC - Free Webinar - MER Society & Lisa Spaven - June 2026

MERS free Ocean Day webinar this year will be on Leatherback Sea Turtles, the only sea turtle species which belongs in BC waters.

Every Ocean Day, MERS provides a webinar for schools that features an astounding marine neighbour that adults may not even realize lives off our coast, AND they want that information to come from an expert on the species.

This year, they are so fortunate that it will be sea turtle expert (and great friend of MERS), Lisa Spaven. Lisa is the lead author of the 2026 research paper "They’re Out There, You Know: Sea Turtle Sightings and Strandings in Canadian Pacific Waters.”

Leatherback Sea Turtles are the largest reptile in the world, endangered, astoundingly adapted to deal with cold water, and they come all the way from Indonesia to feed on jellies off our coast.

The content will be appropriate for all ages, but the educational approach will be geared toward elementary school students, and they will be the priority for discussion and questions.
