In this workshop, you will learn about wood grain, alignment, and essential personal and tool safety. Participants will be provided with a pre-shaped blank of wood and carving tools for the workshop. From simple to fancy depends on how far you want to take it in this fun and informative introduction to wood carving.

Rick Wolcott – I identify as 3/4 white and 1/4 Tillamook from the Southern end of Coast Salishian Speakers, although nobody speaks our language anymore. My family came to Canada in 1953 after living in all the western and mid-western States and Mexico. My father was in Seismic work. We had a Pawnee crew and my God father was Owen Echo Hawk. I have been carving since I was 5 according to my mom. We visited my mom’s parents every summer and I spent summers and weekends with him while going to school in Portland. My Grandfather was James Forest, a Nehalem Tillamook on the Oregon coast. He taught me tool making and told me many stories from the coast and how to represent them in woods. I began teaching with the Calgary Board of Education in 1980 and have taught ever since. I’ve taught across Canada and the United States and am currently teaching 8 two-day classes through Lee Valley Tools to celebrate Canada’s 150. We are doing Westcoast Paddles. For the last 10 years, I have run weekly classes out of my shop. I have also taught week long classes at Kin Beach PP near Comox for 15 years. My commissioned pieces are in France, Germany, United States and Canada although I do not work through any galleries and don’t have a web site – just word of mouth.
Carving on the Edge Festival is a celebration of the West coast carver held each year on the beautiful West coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. The festival showcases traditional and contemporary West coast wood carving with exhibits, forums, feasts, family programs and demonstrations.
