Royal Roads University MA Program: Environmental Education & Communication-Biosphere & Sustainability - July 2019

This course draws heavily on the principles of resilience thinking as a key component of sustainability science. Resilience is the ability of a system to respond to shocks and stresses in a manner that protects and restores the main functions and components of the system (Walker et al. 2004). In recognition of our location of learning within the Clayoquot Sound UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and our host communities of Ahousaht, Tla-o-qui-aht, and Tofino.

Outline:

Our emphasis is on the social-ecological system relationships that foster community resilience on the west coast. Magis (2010, 401) defines community resilience as the “existence, development and engagement of community resources by community members to thrive in an environment characterized by change, uncertainty, unpredictability and surprise.” The ability to respond to social and environmental change is of key importance for understanding the ‘Biosphere and Sustainability’. Throughout this course residency, we will learn first-hand from local people and their experiences of change, recovery, and transformation.
