Rock Rescue Course for Sea Kayakers - October 2026
Outline:
The Sea Kayak Rock Rescue Program is an intensive three-day course designed for experienced paddlers looking to elevate their rescue skills in high-energy coastal rock environments. Blending elements of Swiftwater Rescue and whitewater site management with sea kayak-specific applications, this program equips participants with the ability to read dynamic water features, set safety in rock gardens, and execute advanced swimmer and boat extractions. Through hands-on practice in real-world conditions, paddlers will learn to identify critical hazards, make rapid risk assessments, and employ effective communication strategies to manage incidents safely and efficiently.
Participants will progress through structured on-water modules, covering self-rescue in surge zones, rope work adapted for ocean use, and incident management principles grounded in real-world scenarios. Emphasis is placed on understanding water features in surge channels, pour-overs, and tide races—key features often encountered amongst the features we love to play in
and around.
Complementing the on-water training are focused classroom sessions exploring cognitive theory under stress and decision-making under pressure, and providing insight into the psychological components of emergency response. Participants will engage in scenario-based learning that challenges their skills in leadership, problem-solving, and group management during complex rescues. Whether you are a guide responsible for client safety or a dedicated paddler seeking to push your boundaries, the Sea Kayak Technical Rock Rescue Program prepares you for the demanding realities of coastal paddling.
