West Coast Outdoor Leadership Training - May 2018

If you are interested in the Indigenous Peoples and the Pacific coastal environment, and are pursuing a career in outdoor education, leadership, or guiding, this is a great course for you to consider. Taking place in Hesquiaht Harbour, the traditional territory of Hooksum’s owners and operators, the course offers 28 days of living and learning outside. It begins when you are picked up by a traditional dugout cedar canoe and continues with learning skills in sea kayaking, canoeing, surfing, and wilderness first aid. West Coast Outdoor Leadership Training offers experiences and lessons that will last a lifetime.

Outline:

This 28-day intensive program allows participants to gain the hard and soft skills essential to coastal guiding and outdoor leadership. Certification courses include: Red Cross First Responder, Paddle Canada Sea Kayaking Levels I and II, Lifesaving Society Bronze Medallion and Bronze Cross, and Canadian Power Squadron Maritime Radio Course. Other elements of the Training include learning about Hesquiaht territories, culture and history; canoeing; surfing; and leadership and guiding.
