Organization

Sea Smart

Instructor

Brittany Ahmann

Outline:

This week-long virtual camp provides girls with the opportunity to learn what it's like to be a marine biologist!

Sea Smart’s Girls-Only Marine Biologist in Training (MBIT) online program will challenge the widely-held stereotype that STEM (Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) careers are for boys, and instead provide a canvas for girls to learn, flourish and enroot a sense of belonging in STEM. Girls in our program will learn about marine ecology, scientific research, and how to pursue a career in marine sciences. We will be hosting professional women in STEM to discuss their work and answer questions about pursuing a career in STEM. These will be inspirational talks by female scientist guest speakers from university students, researchers, and women in the industry.

Each day consists of 2 hours of live, interactive video conferences and up to 2 hours of self-led curriculum.

Dates:
Aug 10 - 14 Ages 8-9 & 10-12
Aug 17 - 21 Ages 10-12

*NOTE: Marine Biologists in Training camps are for girls only to help address the vast underrepresentation of girls in science-related fields. Sea Smart embraces an inclusive definition of “women” and “girls” that includes people who identify as women, girls, trans, gender queer, gender non-binary, Two-Spirit, and gender questioning. An inclusive environment means all participants feel safe and supported, however they may identify.
