Outline:

In this 2 hour workshop, Rose Wilson of Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ First Nation will share her knowledge of weaving. Participants will have the chance to learn the art and skill of cedar weaving, create a cedar craft to take home, and learn about many aspects of weaving such as:

  • the uses of cedar bark and how and when cedar bark is gathered and prepared
  • the uses of grass baskets and the various types of grasses that are used
  • challenges of traditional weaving such as loss of knowledge and a decline in material availability

Weaver Rose Wilson of Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ First Nation is both self taught and has the traditional teachings from elders in processing materials and creating traditional works of art. Rose works with red and yellow cedar bark and several types of specific grasses to create clothing, hats, baskets which incorporate traditional and meaningful designs that have been passed down through her family for many generations.
