40h Wilderness First Aid + CPR C - March 2023

Saturday March 4th to Tuesday March 7th (8:30 am to 4:30 pm)

The 40 hour Wilderness First Aid with CPR C course (40 hour WFA) course is a five day certification course in Tofino. Only the Friday evening portion (CPR portion) of the course takes place inside. The rest of the course is run in the field with a focus on hands on experience. Students will learn and practice; trip planning and preparation, adult, child and infant CPR (Level ‘C’), obstructed airway procedures, artificial respiration, use of an Automated External Defibrillator, prevention of disease transmission and wound management. Recognition and first-aid treatment for drowning/partial drowning, heart attack and stroke, allergic reactions and anaphylactic shock, hypothermia, heat stroke, bone, muscle and joint injuries, poisons, burns, diabetic emergencies, head and spine injuries, evacuation, transportation and extended care will also be covered.

Most importantly the course develops students abilities to help patients by developing wilderness emergency decision making skills required to assess patients and make evacuation plans. Students will practice both the acquired hard skills in combination with decision making skills during realistic outdoor scenarios designed to build students confidence in their ability to respond to emergencies in remote settings.

40 hour Wilderness First Aid Certification is the standard for outdoor and wilderness adventure guides including assistant overnight sea kayak guides.

Wilderness First-Aid 40-hour with CPR-C is a five day course; Friday evening to Tuesday afternoon. Must participate in all 5 days to receive certification.

What Is The Difference Between The 20 Hour And 40 Hour Course?

The 40 hour and 20 hour course are run in conjunction, and share the same first 3 days. Following the weekend the 40 hour course will specifically go more in depth into splinting, longer term care scenarios (over 24 hours from medical aid), monitoring of vital signs and packaging scenarios. Other advanced skills including how to rule out spinal injuries, reducing dislocations, and realigning fractures.

the 40 hour course is ideal for guides and those leading multi day wilderness trips. This is also the certification required for an Assistant Overnight sea kayak guide with SKGABC.

Course Instructor

Red Cross instructor Emre Bosut, of Swell Education, brings over 20 years of outdoor industry and instructing experience to wildenress first aid courses. With a background in whitewater, ocean and surf instructing and guiding Emre has worked around Canada and internationally and continues to be an active guide an instructor trainer in the outdoor industry.
