Black Oystercatchers are ubiquitous year-round residents all along the rocky coastlines of the region. In fact, they are common up and down the entire Pacific coast of North America. Their wide latitudinal range and (usually) sedentary habits make them an ideal study species. Comparing the diet, habits and movements of individuals from different areas and populations has yielded new insights into the ecology of the species, and a greater understanding of how a variety of environmental factors affect the productivity of intertidal ecosystems.

This talk will share the results of several years of investigations conducted by the RES, ECCC, SFU, and PRNPR into these familiar and fascinating birds.

The Raincoast Education Society's West Coast Ambassador Program “aims to build a strong and healthy community, encouraging a positive attitude among responsible citizens, improving community relations with visitors, and growing support for the diversity and well-being of area businesses.”
