Join Tofino Clayoquot Heritage Museum to learn about the history of surfing in our community!

Tofino is widely known as the surf capital of Canada. This exhibition explores some of the key places, surfers, and events that helped popularize surfing in our community and made it part of our identity.

There will be an exhibition opening on July 14th from 4:30-6:30pm. This event is free, open to all ages and does not require registration.

The exhibit will run from July 14th until August 25th, 2024 at the Tofino Clayoquot Heritage Museum. The museum is open Monday-Sunday 11-5.

Are you enthralled by eagles? Wowed by woodpeckers? Discover the unique adaptations and natural history of the beautiful birds that call Pacific Rim home. Binoculars are great but not necessary.

This event is free with the purchase of a National Parks entry pass. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Please do not bring pets and recording devices are not permitted.

Join the Tofino Community Food Initiative (TCFI) and see what local gardeners are capable of growing here on the West Coast and get inspired to do so too! 

During the event, you will be able to visit 6-8 different local edible gardens. Rides will be available on the district of Tofino Weagle Wagon departing from the Wickaninnish School Garden at 12.30 p.m., but feel free to also carpool with your friends! 

The tour schedule will be sent to registered participants the week before the event. To not overwhelm gardeners, this year TCFI is limiting the amount of attendees to 30 people. 

To cover the costs of this event and to help fund TCFI's programs, there is a suggested $20 per ticket donation (kids free). If this is a barrier for you, TCFI would like you to join anyway, please just email their program coordinator to be added to the tour list at katie@tofinocommunityfoodinitiative.com

Join the Raincoast Education Society in exploring the region’s intertidal eelgrass meadows during their Beach Seine events this summer!

Intertidal eelgrass meadows, like those visible in Tofino’s harbor, are extremely important coastal ecosystems. Not only are they home to numerous invertebrates including nudibranchs, crabs, and shrimp, but they also play a crucial role in supporting many of the region’s fish and bird populations. This is your chance to learn how!

Most of us have probably encountered eelgrass – from spending hours in the ocean alongside these green ribbons, or exploring eelgrass-filled mudflats. Eelgrass meadows create habitat for a myriad of coastal species and act as a highly productive ecosystem. And it’s thanks to eelgrass that today’s halibut fish fry or tonight’s salmon dinner is possible. The meadows form a buffer in the water that softens the impact of waves and currents, reducing coastal erosion and creating a calm habitat. This provides a nursery for many juvenile fish, including rockfish, salmon and halibut, and also provides an ideal habitat for herring to spawn. These fish are preyed upon by waterfowl such as: Great Blue Heron, migrating shorebirds and ducks. In addition, eelgrass blades act as a substrate for diatoms and other algae, which get grazed upon by many eelgrass-dwelling invertebrates such as nudibranchs, crabs and shrimp.

At the Beach Seine events, you will have the opportunity to help pull the seine up onto the beach and investigate species caught inside. Raincoast Education Society staff will teach you how to handle the animals caught with care, and all species will be gently returned to their habitat.

These interactive opportunities are FREE, all-ages events. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to join! Events will run rain or shine, and gumboots are recommended.
