Arthur Lismer Paintings Exhibit

The Tofino Clayoquot Heritage Museum received a generous donation of two Arthur Lismer paintings from an anonymous donor. This past December 2022 the museum installed the paintings after they had been conserved and framed. 

Arthur Lismer, a member of the Group of Seven, visited Long Beach on several occasions and painted ocean and forest scenes. A small beach near Wickaninnish Beach is named after him. 

Maquinna Hotel: If Walls Could Talk" Exhibit

The Maquinna Hotel, built in 1959, was the largest building in downtown Tofino and was at times a vibrant social hub. This exhibit delves into past owners, clients, and changes that the Maquinna Hotel has seen over the years.

Join Redd Fish Restoration Society & Surf Club Ceramics for a fin-tastic event. Dive into the mesmerizing world of ceramic salmon forests!

This 2-part event begins on October 7th: Led by Lydia Karpenko of Surf Club Ceramics, create handcrafted ceramic salmon sculptures, each one capturing the essence of the majestic fish that inhabit our waters. This course is desgined for kids (suggested ages 6-12). This intro ceramics class will teach the kids basic hand-building skills, while learning about salmon and their importance to our community. Kids will build and glaze their salmon, all materials provided. The salmon will then be fired and prepared for installation which leads us to the second part...

October 28th: Led by Redd Fish, enjoy a mystical walk on the Wild Pacific Trail and witness the handcrafted salmon come to life as they make their way through the forest. At the Ceramic Salmon Art Installation, kids will be able to learn about how their salmon contribute to the health of our forests. Parents are invited to join us on the interpretive walk. Salmon can either be taken home after the walk, or left for the public to explore the installation for 2 weeks (pick-up at a later date).

The cost to run this mobile workshop is $85 per person which includes the following:

• all materials needed to make 1 ceramic salmon fish by each student
• 2 hours of in-person instruction
• set up, clean up, safe transportation of clay pieces to my studio
• careful drying, glazing and firing pieces by Lydia in her studio
• delivery of finished pieces to the students
• installation of ceramic salmon for interpretive walk

4 ROLES OF ADVOCATES - workshop #2

There are many different roles to play in any social movement—something for everyone! Understanding the 4 roles will help you figure out how best to join and support the movement of your choice. Each role can be played in an effective way which builds your movement, rather than ineffectively in ways that can harm your movement. Different roles become more or less important, depending on which stage your movement is at. Ideally, an advocate will learn to play all 4 roles effectively.

This will be a fun opportunity to learn and connect during family-friendly activities, gardening demos, food & drinks, live music, and more!

There will be some great opportunities to learn about gardening with the Tofino Community Food Initiative as well as about electric fencing with WildSafeBC. Electric fencing is an effective solution to deter bears and other wildlife from accessing human food sources such as small livestock, chicken coops, beehives, or fruit trees. Don't miss these garden and electric fencing demos led by local experts!

SPECTRUM OF ALLIES - workshop #3

It’s easy to think in black and white, and to divide your world into ‘us and them’. The real world is a bit more complicated—people defending the status quo may have the best of intentions, or may actually be onside with your movement’s goals, even though they work for the status quo.

This session will help you to understand how to move people towards supporting your goals, even if they are on the other side of an issue.

BEAUTIFUL TROUBLE - final workshop #4

This session will pull together all the concepts introduced so far. Clayoquot Action will use the Beautiful Trouble card deck to look at Theories, Principles, Methodologies, Tactics and Stories. The cards will then be used to work on a plan which could be applied to a local issue!
