Marine Ecology

This 2- to 2.5-hour course explores the intertidal and pelagic ecosystems of Clayoquot and Barkley Sounds, highlighting the incredible diversity of seaweeds, invertebrates, marine mammals, and more. Participants will also learn about local oceanographic conditions and the vital role this rich marine environment plays in sustaining life along this coast.

Beyond education, this course is about connection, helping people develop a deeper appreciation for this beautiful space and equipping them with the knowledge to advocate for its protection against the threats of ignorance and overuse. Through our exhibits, we facilitate in-depth conversations and hands-on activities that illustrate how every part of the ecosystem interacts, fostering a greater understanding of the intricate balance that sustains marine life.

Small Town, Big Picture is a suggested prerequisite for this course.

This outdoor course focuses on our coastal temperate rainforest. From the forest floor to the top of the canopy, you will explore the many interactions that make up the fabric of this iconic habitat.  Join us to discover the dynamic nature of old-growth forests!

Nuu-chah-nulth Land and Waters with ƛaʔuuk/Gisele Maria Martin

Resident guests and visitors in Tofino are invited to an introduction session with Gisele Maria Martin to learn about Indigenous Nuučaanuł/Nuu-chah-nulth Cultural Lifeways,
protocols, laws, and living teachings which protect this beautiful place, as well as early and ongoing contact, and the importance of language.

Gisele is a Cultural Lifeways Guardian, language educator, storyteller, and artist in the Tla-o-qui-aht Tribal Parks located in the ƛaʔuukʷiʔatḥ Ḥawiiḥ.

Some of the Coolest Biodiversity Ever: Frogs, Bogs, Salamanders & Salt Marshes

Barb is the founder of the Wetland Stewards for Clayoquot & Barkley Sounds, a charitable society that does applied research and educational outreach on amphibian species at risk. Highlights of that work include the successful installation of tunnel systems that allow frogs and salamanders to migrate safely under roads, and the protection of important wetland habitats from logging, development, and invasive species. Barb’s talk will include some fascinating and fun facts about local amphibians, and one of their foes - the invasive Yellow Flag Iris.

Eelgrass Ecosystems: The Community That Sustains Us All

Alana is an Aquarist and Interpreter at the Ucluelet Aquarium, and she will share about the vital role eelgrass meadows play in coastal ecosystems. Come learn how these underwater habitats support marine biodiversity, protect shorelines, and contribute to climate resilience.

Meet Barb Beasley from the Wetland Stewards of Clayoquot and Barkley Sounds and Jason Straka from the BC Conservation Data Centre for a hands-on conservation experience. Help remove invasive yellow flag iris from Kimoto Park while learning from two experts in wetland ecology and biodiversity monitoring. Bring your smartphone to record species sightings on iNaturalist and contribute to citizen science efforts that support healthy ecosystems.

Meet at the Whale Lot of the Wild Pacific Trail at 2pm and we'll walk to the work site together.

This event requires moving over uneven, steep, and slippery forest, salt marsh and beach terrain with obstacles such as (but not limited to) logs, roots, and rocks.

The Tofino Clayoquot Heritage Museum has restarted its historical walking tours for the summer season! 

Every Wednesday

• Tour 1: 11 AM - 12 PM
• Tour 2: 2-3 PM
• $10 per person (cash or card accepted)

Their tours cover Tofino’s historic waterfront and town, and are a great activity for tourists or residents wanting to become more familiar with Tofino.

The museum is also open daily, 10 AM - 4 PM, offering a look into Tofino's history, a great activity, especially on rainy days!

The Wild Pacific Trail naturalists and other local partner organizations look forward to meeting you for walks and events at their Discovery Tent overlooking Amphitrite Lighthouse on the lighthouse Loop Trail section.

The Wild Pacific Trail is a unique outdoor classroom that offers incredible opportunities to connect people to nature. Their seasonal Discovery Tent at the lighthouse offers revolving topics for all ages.

Easy to walk, one-hour programs aim to engage both visitors and local communities. Topics range from natural to cultural history. 

Learning opportunities are offered most days of the week from June until September. Stay tuned for more details - full schedule of events coming soon!

This summer, let interpreters from Parks Canada inspire and fascinate you as you experience all that the region has to offer! 

Discover and explore the tide-pools and rainforest. Feel a fuzzy sea otter pelt. Listen to stories that are older than our ancient trees. See the land and water from a different perspective as you immerse yourself in the cultural and natural treasures of the Pacific Rim. 

NOTE: Public programs are supported through the purchase of a national park entry pass. Programs are presented in English, with special programming available in French.
