The Not-So Glamorous Life of a Marine Biologist

From collecting whale snot to sifting through fecal samples, marine biologists go to great (and often quite unglamorous) lengths to help protect British Columbia’s vulnerable cetacean populations.  Cetaceans (whales, dolphins, and porpoises) face many human-caused threats in our coastal waters, including reduced prey availability, exposure to contaminants, noise from vessel traffic, entanglement in fishing gear, and injuries or death resulting from vessel collisions.  Join Jessica Torode, Coordinator of the BC Cetacean Sightings Network, to learn about the not-so glamorous life of a marine biologist, and how research at the Coastal Ocean Research Institute’s Marine Mammal Research Program (an Ocean Wise initiative) is helping to protect whales, dolphins, and porpoises in BC waters.
