Informing Disaster Resilience: a Nuu-chah-nulth Way of Knowing - Raincoast Speaker Series

For the Nuu-chah-nulth First Nation, this interplay between Indigenous knowledge and disaster resilience is no exception. From earthquakes to climate change and colonization to state-constructed present day policies, Nuu-chah-nulth communities have experienced countless natural and human induced disasters. Although many of these events have challenged the communities’ capacity to cope, each event has invariably added to the depth of Nuu-chah-nulth knowledge that is bound within and between these communities.

Dr. Emily Dicken is the Director of First Nations Coordination with Emergency Management BC. She works professionally and academically to explore decolonization within the field of practice of Emergency Management, with a central focus on understanding colonialism as an unnatural and enduring disaster impacting Indigenous communities. Emily has worked as a practitioner in the field of emergency management since 2006.

Admission is $5 at the door.
